A Psychology Toolkit for Parents

Improving communication and building your child’s resilience

Whether your child is dealing with a specific issue or you want to improve communication and understanding, I will give you the tools you need to feel more confident in supporting them, whatever challenge they face.

Understanding family dynamics and improving communication

Drawing on principles of Psychology, I will help you gain a deeper understanding of family dynamics – parents and children, siblings and other relatives.

Through this, you will not only better appreciate the workings of your own family interactions, but will also be able to use these to help your child negotiate friendships and other relationships in the future.

As your child grows and comes into the teenage years, it is more important than ever to keep communication open.  I help parents to combine empathy with boundaries, manage screens, and learn how to motivate without pushing so as to best support their child in their studies and sport.

Managing your child through anxiety or heightened emotions

I will help you to identify how you can best support your child when he/she is experiencing anxiety or is struggling to manage their emotions.

Not only will I help you to identify practical actions, but I will also work with you to increase your self-awareness so that you are able to manage your own thoughts, feelings and behaviours in those moments.  This will mean that you are better positioned to support your child, and will also feel calmer and more in control.

Supporting your neurodiverse child (e.g. ADHD, ASD, Dyslexia, Anxiety)

I have specialist training and experience in supporting parents whose children either have traits of, or have a formal diagnosis of, neurodiverse conditions such as ADHD and ASD.

Based on neuropsychology, I will help you understand how your child experiences the world and to identify strategies to support them.  This may include considering how to help them manage their emotions, reduce impulsivity, build relationships and improve their organisation and planning skills.

You may also feel exhausted or at the end of your tether and so our sessions will also give you a sounding board and a release, and will help you to build your own resilience so that you feel stronger and more confident in yourself, as well as more connected with your child.

Managing a competitive child

I will support you to get the best out of your child, helping you to build their coping skills so that they are more resilient in the face of set-backs.  I will help you to understand their mindset, and the impact that this can have on their attitude to challenge and perseverance, considering also how the language and actions of those around them can impact on their mentality.

We will also explore different facets of motivation, helping you to safeguard their mental well-being by ensuring that their desire to win does not overshadow their enjoyment.

Supporting your child through change

Whether your child is moving schools, adapting to life with a new sibling or adjusting to new family circumstances, I will help you to identify the factors that you can influence to support them through their transition.

Depending on the nature of the change, we may cover family dynamics, motivation, or their basic psychological needs, so that you are not only equipped with practical techniques to help them adapt, but also feel more positive and confident in keeping communication open and safeguarding their well-being.

Training: Psychology skills for Parents

In addition to working 1:1, I also provide Psychology Skills for Parents training in groups covering topics such as Moving to Secondary School, Sports Psychology for Parents, Resilience and Coping Skills, Motivation and Building Confidence.

If there is a specific issue that you would like to be covered then please do get in touch and I would be happy to develop a bespoke session.

How do I know if Psychology for Parents is right for me?

I struggle to get through to my child

Using psychological models and techniques, I can help you to better understand where communication between yourself and your child may break down.  This will enable you to gain objectivity, become more self-aware and provide you with new tools to change the way in which you interact with each other.

I don’t know how to support my child with ADHD/ASD/dyslexia/SPD

With specialist training and experience in neurodiversity, I will help you understand how your child processes and experiences the world.  As a result, you will feel more connected with them and more confident in your parenting.  You will also be equipped with specific strategies to help them manage their emotions, reduce their impulsivity and improve their organisation and planning skills.

My partner and I take different approaches to dealing with my child

Drawing on principles of Psychology, I will help you to view your family dynamics through a fresh pair of eyes.  I can support you in identifying how family roles and interactions impact on your child so that you feel clearer on the steps you can take to break unhelpful patterns and to improve communication and understanding.

My child is about to start a new school

Covering theories of transition and well-being, I will help you to understand the psychological and practical ways in which you can support your child through any major change.  This will help you to feel more focused and pro-active, as well as calmer and more in control yourself.

I don’t know how to help my child with their anxiety

I will help you gain greater clarity about your child’s experience of anxiety as well as to consider how to manage your own reactions when you see them struggling.

Based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapies, I will support you develop strategies so that you feel better equipped and more assured.

My Approach

While I do work with children directly, my aim is to give parents and carers the psychological tools to support their children as they grow.

I am fascinated by family dynamics and I offer parents and carers models through which they can better understand their own family interactions.  By encouraging parents to take a step back, they can get perspective and view family communications more objectively, increasing self-awareness and empathy and revealing where changes can be made to make communication more effective.

I also have specialist training and experience in supporting parents of children with neurodiverse conditions such as ADHD, ASD and dyslexia.  Based on neuropsychology, I help parents to understand how their child processes and experiences the world, and equip them with specific strategies around areas such as emotional regulation, impulsivity and planning and organisation.
